The Audi S6 Saloon is a car with quite an interesting role to play. It sits in between two other Audi ‘6’ models, the A6 saloon and the RS6 Avant. The Audi A6 Saloon is a luxury machine that is the equivalent to something like a BMW 5-series or a Jaguar XF, and the Audi RS6 is a monstrous 600bhp+ estate car, so what is the Audi S6 Saloon meant to do?
Well, it’s probably best thought of as a gentle performance car, not too aggressive, not too expensive but noticeably more impressive in terms of pace over a standard Audi A6 Saloon, while not on the same level as the weapons-grade Audi RS6 Avant. Further to this, Audi’s emphasis on a subtler level of performance is enhanced by the firm’s choice of engine – it’s a diesel.
Not just any old diesel though, this is an enhanced version of one of the very best diesel engines on the market – a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 with 345bhp and generating a whopping 700Nm of torque. This gives a 0-62mph sprint time of exactly 5-seconds and a top speed of 155mph, but it doesn’t tell the whole story about how exactly this engine goes about its business. It’s a relatively quiet, relaxed unit that rarely raises its voice (though it does make a soft sporty noise) and returns impressive fuel economy figures in the mid-30’s in miles per gallon. A Tiptronic automatic transmission with 8 forward gears also aids with the pacey but refined character of this car.
Inside, you’ll be pleased to discover that the Audi S6 Saloon is also a relatively practical machine with plenty of passenger space in the rear seats and a large boot that can hold 520-litres of whatever you happen to be carrying. Top spec Audi S6 Saloon Vorsprung models also come with full leather upholstery, adaptive air suspension, dynamic all-wheel steering, laser headlights with an LED matrix system and a Bang and Olufsen premium sound system, enhancing the already luxurious feel of a modern-day Audi.
