AUDI E-TRON
The Audi e-tron isn’t just Audi’s first electric car, it’s also one of the first of many luxury electric cars to arrive in the near future.
2019 is a big year for luxury electric cars. The upcoming Porsche Taycan and Mercedes-Benz EQC are due to arrive later this year, but the new Audi e-tron has beaten them to market - even if it didn’t beat Jaguar’s i-Pace that arrived last year.
After years of development, the e-tron is finally ready for sale. In terms of the current fashions, it certainly fits in, looking much like a standard luxury SUV. It makes no effort to shout about its zero-emission power source, instead it just aims to be a chunky, handsome looking car that fits in nicely with the rest of the Audi range.
We’re still getting used to not talking about ‘engine ranges’, instead we now talk about batteries. In the e-tron it’s a 95kWh lithium-ion battery producing 355bhp. When fully charged, Audi says it will provide a range of 248-miles, as well as a 0-62mph time of 5.7-seconds – not bad at all for a car that weighs in just a few kilos under 2.5-tonnes. Audi says the e- tron is capable of being charged to 100% in just under 9-hours if using a 11kW charger. Later this year, Audi says that 150kW DC charging stations will become available, with even higher rates to follow from 2020. At a 150KW charger, the e-tron should reach 80% charge in under 30-minutes.
Currently, just 2 e-tron models are offered – a base e-tron and the special ‘Launch Edition’. As you might expect, even the standard car comes with plenty of tech. Adaptive air suspension, twin infotainment and control screens with high definition displays (10.1-inch and 8.6-inch in size), navigation that includes charging points along your routes, wireless charging and Audi’s famous ‘Quattro’ all-wheel drive. Even the wing mirrors can be replaced by cameras now, a cost option but one not yet seen on any other production model. These, along with a full leather interior, adaptive cruise control and LED matrix headlights – among much more – are all part of the Launch Edition model.
