Posted 10 months agoThe Cupra Ateca car lease - a fast, comfortable SUV with serious performance - was the first model to be launched under the new Cupra brand, a sporty, lifestyle-driven offshoot of Spanish car builder Seat. It’s a relatively new brand, but it definitely has a familiar face and the tribal tattoo-inspired badge on its cars give it a hugely distinctive face.
In essence, the Cupra Ateca is the performance version of the Seat Ateca, but given its own identity as a car existing under the new brand of Cupra. Cupra has taken the Ateca and given it some serious sporting abilities courtesy of a beefy engine, big brakes, a retuned suspension and the inevitable changes to the body styling and distinctive quad-exhaust layout.
Let’s talk about the engine first - it’s the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine found in many cars from within the Volkswagen Group that Cupra sits under the umbrella of. You’ll find this engine in the likes of the Volkswagen ‘R’ models and in the Cupra Ateca’s stablemates, the Cupra Leon and Cupra Formentor. In the Cupra Ateca it gives you 296bhp to play with, sent to the ground via a 7-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. That means a sub-5-second 0-62mph time and a top speed of 153mph. It’s the only engine choice here, but what an engine it is.
Adaptive dampers for the suspension are standard here, giving you the ability to tighten up the ride a little when the mood takes you, or loosen it up for a more relaxing ride. If you should wish to, big Brembo brakes are an option too, meaning you get enormous stopping power to match the enormous speed and acceleration the Cupra Ateca offers. Dynamically speaking, it won’t be as sharp as the Cupra Leon in the corners because of its higher, well, height and a greater weight, but SUVs offering performance like this (think Porsche Macan or Mercedes-AMG GLA) cost considerably more, so there’s a real place on the market for this car.
It should be noted that aside from just being a fast car, this is also a pretty practical family car too. There’s plenty of room for passengers, making seating very comfortable and even a 485-litre boot in the rear (around 25-litres smaller than a Seat version of the Ateca)
