Nissan Townstar review
With stricter emissions rules, heavier traffic, and a growing pressure to switch to cleaner transport, businesses need a sustainable fleet to stay competitive and efficient. If this sounds familiar, we might just have something for you. Although the Nissan Townstar is a relatively new addition to the market, it’s compact, capable, and designed to meet the needs of modern businesses.
In this Nissan Townstar review, we break down engine options, running costs, and key features to help you decide if it’s the right choice. As an official Nissan Broker Partner, Synergy can help secure a Townstar on your terms.
Nissan Townstar engine options
Unlike some competitors there’s no diesel option with the Townstar, and for good reason. Nissan want to focus solely on electric and petrol power, a growing trend within the industry.
Petrol
For those who prefer a traditional combustion engine, the Townstar comes as standard with a 1.3-litre TCe petrol engine. It’s designed to balance power and economy, especially if you cover higher miles.
- Produces 130bhp and 240Nm of torque
- Compliant with Euro 6d-Full emissions regulations
- Offers up to 41mpg, making it an economical option
Electric
The electric Townstar replaces the e-NV200 as Nissan’s small electric van, offering improved range, efficiency, and technology. With enhanced battery management and a more refined drive, it’s a step forward for the brand’s van line-up.
- Provides up to 183 miles (WLTP) on a single charge
- Delivers 245Nm of torque for responsive performance
- Battery thermal cooling for efficiency
Running costs and efficiency
If you’re still driving an older diesel van and finding running costs keep rising, now might be a great time to switch. The Townstar’s electric powertrain offers a much lower cost-per-mile than petrol or diesel vans, along with reduced maintenance expenses thanks to fewer moving parts and less wear things like brakes. Even if you choose the petrol version, you’ll get an economical small van. It can achieve up to 41.4 mpg, making it one of the most fuel-efficient vans.
Driving and performance
On the move, you’ll find the Townstar comfortable and refined. It’s petrol engine produces 130bhp, 240Nm of torque and comes with a six-speed manual gearbox which is smooth and easy to use. The electric version delivers impressive acceleration thanks to its electric motor, with almost instant torque. Couple this with well-tuned suspension and the Townstar absorbs road imperfections with ease, great on longer trips or shorter city commutes.
Safety features
Nissan has equipped a range of safety features to their smallest van, supporting fleet drivers and small business owners alike. As standard you can expect:
- Advanced Emergency Braking with pedestrian/cyclist protection
- Lane Departure Warning and Traffic Sign Recognition
- Reversing Parking Sensors
- eCall emergency system
Higher trim levels like the Tekna add an intelligent Around View Monitor (360-degree colour cameras) as well as Blind Spot Detection with intervention assist.
Nissan Townstar interior notes
Inside the cabin is well-designed with a modern layout. All models come with an 8inch colour touchscreen with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto. There’s a two-seat passenger bench with centre console with storage and armrest, as well as a full width bulkhead. These are great features that add a touch of comfort and help make the Townstar feel car-like.
Full capacity and load area dimensions
Nissan claims the Townstar can perfectly meet the needs of customers like SMEs by offering convenience and space. There are two body lengths to choose from, L1 and L2. The short-wheelbase L1 has a 3.3 m³ load capacity while the long-wheelbase L2 variant extends the capacity to 4.3 m³.
Depending on the Townstar you configure, it can transport two Euro pallets, has a maximum payload of up to 800kg and a towing capacity of up to 1,500kg. The cargo area features large sliding doors, load-securing points and durable floor lining to help with functionality. This helps the Townstar adapt to each businesses’ specific requirements.
Similar vans to the Townstar
This wouldn’t be a Nissan Townstar review if we didn’t look at some key rivals. Let’s start with the Renault Kangoo, which shares its platform with the Townstar. This comes with a choice of petrol, diesel, or electric powertrains. It’s well equipped with a very similar payload and cargo space dimensions.
Then there’s the Ford Transit Courier, a popular small van that has sharp design touches. It’s an award-winning van and a strong contender thanks to Ford’s reputation.
