The executive saloon – and estate – sector is one of the great battlegrounds of the motoring world, with fantastic products butting heads, competing to be the very best in class. Britain’s entry into this luxurious showdown is the Jaguar XF.
Jaguar historically has a great talent for producing cars with superb driving dynamics. Though the trick in this competitive part of the market is to make entertaining mix with comfort, something that’s actually quite difficult to do. The XF has accomplished rivals who already do this quite well. Think along the lines of BMW 5-series, Audi A6, and the Lexus GS.
From an engineering perspective, the XF makes for good reading. Aluminium is used a lot in its construction, keeping the weight down, and there’s a great selection of powerful 4 and 6-cylinder engines, as well as an 8-speed automatic gearbox produced by the renowned cog-swappers ‘ZF’. Jaguar takes it further in the pursuit of the perfect drive too, offering a clever adaptive all-wheel drive system, configurable driving modes, and even offers the rare treat of a manual gearbox for those who particularly enjoy making their own shifts.
The XF is available as either a saloon or as the ‘Sportbrake’ – Jaguar’s name for an estate – which is a roomy car that doesn’t sacrifice performance. The Sportbrake is so good to drive it has even been offered as a ‘XF-R’ sport model in the past, something BMW stopped doing with its 5-series quite some time ago. If you’re the type of person who enjoys something like mountain biking, the 2-metre long, 1,675-litre boot space (with rear seats folded down) is capable of easily absorbing a couple of bikes and even comes with Jagaur’s ‘Activity Key’, a tough bracelet key that you can wear so you don’t have to worry about taking your keys along with you on an adventure.
As expected, the interior is a luxurious, technology-packed space where the driver has all the gadgets and assistance needed for a drive as relaxing or as exciting as he or she prefers, and there’s good space in the back seats for even taller passengers. The materials used are of a very high quality and it looks and feels as premium as a Jaguar should.
With a muscular image, exceptional overall quality and a drive to match, the Jaguar XF is a rival to any of the best executive saloons out there, a favourite of Synergy customers for one very good reason – it’s a great car.
