Strong looks, strong performance – the GLE Coupe ticks all the boxes.
You’re not fooling anyone, Mercedes. This GLE Coupe isn’t really a coupe at all, it’s an SUV, but we love it anyway because that coupe-inspired design in the form of the sloping roofline and body silhouette makes such a profound impact when you first see it. This is a new model in the Mercedes range, though this class of SUV was first shown off in 1998, back when it was called the ‘M-Class’. Nowadays, it’s known as the ‘GLE’ which is meant to mean ‘E-Class SUV’ in Mercedes speak.
The GLE Coupe is virtually identical to the standard GLE, so it’s an all-wheel driven machine that’s pretty comfortable when it comes to getting off-road but it’s its suspension – particularly the optional air suspension – that makes the GLE so special, it’s such a comfortable car to drive on the road.
Like the standard GLE, the Coupe comes with a 9-speed automatic gearbox as standard so the choice for Synergy customers comes down to which engine to go for. A popular choice remains the ‘350D’ diesel, with 254bhp and impressive 620Nm of torque, the 350D can move the heavy SUV to 62mph in around 7-seconds, and Mercedes says it’s still capable of delivering over 37mpg. If you’re really looking to spoil yourself, make a statement with the high-performance Mercedes-AMG petrol models – in ‘43’ and ‘63’ outputs – both deliver serious performance. AMG does not mess about.
You can expect the usual high-dose of luxury in the GLE Coupe, and as expected, standard equipment levels are rich. You get the top-level ‘COMAND’ navigation as standard, a powered tailgate, active park assist and a reversing camera, smartphone integration and DAB radio. Optional extras are present and there are ‘packs’ to choose from which bundle up certain features.
Despite suffering the usual coupe drawbacks such as stifled head room, leg room, and boot space, the GLE Coupe is still a tough machine underneath and Synergy customers won’t have to worry about getting it mucky from time to time. This is a very comfortable, luxurious and capable SUV that can also turn heads. The best of both worlds, perhaps?
