Posted one month agoOriginally a concept car previewed in 2017, the BMW 8-series has now been unleashed upon the market.
Following on from its debut as a concept car back in 2017, the BMW 8-series has once again returned to the Bavarian firm’s stable, bringing a new high-end prestige model to rival the likes of the Audi A7 and Porsche Panamera.
The 8-series name first appeared back in 1990 on a powerful, dramatically styled Grand Tourer powered by large, high-output 8 or 12-cylinder petrol engines. Over 9-years, 30,000 of them were produced and the 8-series name laid dormant until the new 8-series concept appeared in 2017.
This new 8-series is not all that difference in concepts to the original car, it has returned as a powerful coupe or convertible with a choice between 2 engines designed to make driving both pleasurable and simple. The ‘840d’ looks set to be the most popular, a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder unit with an output of 316bhp and a torque figure – always important in diesel units – of 680Nm. It is the latter that helps propel the 8-series to 62mph in a tenth under 5-seconds. Alternatively, you can opt for petrol power in the ‘850i’. This is a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that generates a mighty 525bhp, giving a sprint to 62mph time of 3.7-seconds, which is supercar-threatening territory. Regardless of your selection, both engines come with BMW’s ‘xDrive’ all-wheel drive system and an 8-speed automatic gearbox from specialist transmission builder ZF.
If this still isn’t quick enough for you, BMW is currently thought to be deep into the development of the ‘M8’, a version of the 8-series enhanced and pushed to even higher levels of performance by the firm’s famous ‘M’ performance department. We’re expected to know more about this exciting machine later in 2019, along with a ‘Gran Coupe’ model which will introduce 4-doors to the body, allowing for greater ease of passenger transport.
