Posted 5 years agoPost-war Italy was not a particularly prosperous or easy place to get by. However, by the mid-1950’s the nation was beginning to climb back to its feet and more of its citizens needed a way to get from A to B. Fiat designer Dante Giacosa had an idea, and this idea spawned into one of the greatest ‘cars of the people’ that we’ve ever seen – the Fiat Cinquecento.
Cinquecento is ‘five-hundred’ to you and me, and the Fiat 500 was launched in 1957, becoming an instant hit with the Italian public, who, for really the first time, were able to have affordable access to personal transport. Over the course of its lifespan, nearly 3,900,000 of them were sold, an unbelievable figure.
The 500 wasn’t actually the first Fiat to be named 500, prior to the war Fiat produced another 500, but this was better known as the ‘Topolino’, meaning ‘little mouse’. Production of what was known as the ‘new’ Fiat 500 ended in 1975, and for a while the world didn’t have a 500 at all. However, in 2007 Fiat launched the new ‘new’ Fiat 500, and it’s been received with the same enthusiasm as customers in 1950’s Italy.
The 21st century Fiat 500 is in some ways vastly different to the original, but also remarkably similar in others. It retains a retro, lovable and ‘cute’ look that has won it so many hearts, but it throws out the old rear-engine layout for a modern front-engine system. Like the 50’s, the engines are small and built with efficiency in mind, but unlike the 50’s, the engines are very high-tech. As we enter 2020, the 500 is getting a hybrid engine option that Fiat claims reduces CO2 emissions by up to 30%. This will be a combination of a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder unit alongside a lithium-ion battery to produce 69bhp and emissions of around 88g/km.
