In the supermini sector of the market, competition is high. There’s the UK’s most popular car – the Ford Fiesta, for a start, a car that really dominates this portion of the market along with the Volkswagen Golf and its VW Group offspring, and the new Nissan Micra. You probably get the idea – standing out is a difficult thing to do when you’re surrounded by brilliant competition.
Despite this, the Mazda 2 really does standout from its group of illustrious rivals by being a very Mazda creation. What we mean by that is that this car really feels like a creation for people who love driving, despite being a fairly simple 5-door supermini.
The current generation of the Mazda 2 was launched in 2014 and it was awarded the title of Japanese Car of the Year pretty soon after. It has flowing, fairly complex lines in its exterior design, part of Mazda’s ‘Kodo’ design philosophy, while the interior is simple and very driver-focused. Building cars that drivers really enjoy is what Mazda does best and the company even has a name for the way that it sets its cars up – ‘Jinba Ittai’ is what the Japanese firm calls it, describing it as a “…sense of being at one with the car, like a horse and rider.”
There’s just one petrol engine for the Mazda 2, and you choose from one of three separate power outputs - 74bhp, 89bhp or 113bhp. In the 2 lower outputs, a 5-speed manual gearbox is provided, at 113bhp, Mazda provides an extra gear for you. Though an automatic is available as an option, Mazda is famous for engineering excellent manual gearboxes and they fit nicely with the Mazda 2’s fabulous handling. As the engine isn’t turbocharged at any power output, its power resides at the top of the rev range, meaning the 2 drives quite differently to its rivals – nearly all of which use turbocharging.
In total there are 6 trim levels for the Mazda 2, with Mazda following a very Japanese philosophy in giving a very limited number of options, and instead encouraging you to choose the trim level that suits you the best. At their respective price points, all 2’s are more than competitively equipped and overall, you have to say that Mazda has produced a car that isn’t just great value, it’s also a truly charismatic machine.
