BMW M2
BMW’s ‘baby’ M car might be small, but it can compete with some of the finest sports cars on the road
BMW’s ‘M’ department is responsible for some of the finest performance cars of the last 40 years, and when driving enthusiasts started to informally request the division turned its attentions to the compact 2-series, it was only too happy to oblige.
The result is the BMW M2, the ultimate performance 2-series. Available only as coupe, this is BMW M’s gift to the driving enthusiasts around the world. To power it, the engine from the larger M3 and M4 performance cars was taken and places under the M2’s bonnet. This famously excellent 3.0-litre turbo straight-six produces close to 410bhp in the M2, and all of that power goes directly to the rear wheels. It produces a fabulous and distinctly BMW soundtrack, and out on the open road the power feels very well balanced for the roads we have here in the UK.
Listening to the requests of BMW enthusiasts, M ensured it would offer a 6-speed manual option for a purer driving experience, even if it isn’t as efficient or as capable as the 7-speed double-clutch automatic option. There’s only a slight difference between 0-62mph times and fuel efficiency, a price many driving enthusiasts are more than happy to pay for greater involvement.
Originally, the M2 was intended to be a limited-production car, but demand was so high that BMW made it a permanent addition to the line-up. The latest model is known as the M2 ‘Competition’ and comes in choice of 5 colours. As a performance model, options are more limited than on a standard BMW model, but the M2 is already exceptionally well equipped. All modern BMW M cars are capable of remarkable performance, but they don’t sacrifice comfort or luxury to achieve a higher cornering speed, all the usual BMW mod-cons are present and correct.
An exhilarating compact sports car with all the quality and prestige expected of a BMW, the M2 is one of the most involving driver’s cars available here at Synergy from a brand with a stellar reputation.
