History

Li Shufu founded Geely in 1986, initially manufacturing refrigerator parts before moving into motorcycles in 1994 and, in 1997, into car manufacturing as China's first privately-owned automobile company. That entry into cars proved decisive: Geely went on to become one of the largest privately-owned manufacturers in China, built on a strategy of in-house development alongside long-term investment in established global brands.

The clearest example came in 2010, when Geely acquired Volvo Cars from Ford. It later helped launch Polestar, Volvo's electric performance brand, and brought Lotus and Smart into its wider group, as well as creating the London Electric Vehicle Company, maker of London's electric black cabs. That combined engineering base is what Geely is now drawing on for its own-brand electric and hybrid cars in the UK.

Current line-up

Geely's UK range currently includes:

- EX5: A fully electric SUV powered by a 160kW motor, offering up to 267 miles of WLTP range and rapid DC charging that takes it from 30% to 80% in around 20 minutes. It runs on Geely's Short Blade Battery technology and carries a five-star Euro NCAP rating.

- Starray: A plug-in hybrid SUV combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined 258bhp. Depending on trim, it offers up to 51 or 84 miles of WLTP electric-only range, with CO2 emissions as low as 32g/km, and also holds a five-star Euro NCAP rating.

More Geely models are expected to join the UK line-up as the brand continues its expansion.
