HOW PERSONAL CAR LEASING WORKS

Personal car leasing is a cost-effective way to drive a brand-new or used car that suits your lifestyle, budget, and mileage needs. Also known as Personal Contract Hire, or Personal Vehicle Leasing, it is a popular option for new and experienced drivers who want use of a vehicle for a fixed period, without the long-term responsibilities of ownership.

A personal lease is built around a few key details:

  1. Initial PaymentMade at the start of the agreement, usually equivalent to several months' rentals.
  2. Contract LengthCommonly 24, 36, or 48 months, depending on the vehicle and finance provider.
  3. Annual Mileage AllowanceReflects how much you expect to drive each year.
  4. End of ContractAs this is a non-ownership agreement, the vehicle is simply returned to the finance provider at the end of the lease, and checked against fair wear & tear guidelines and your agreed mileage allowance. If you need to end your agreement before the contract finishes, early termination charges will apply, so you should intend to keep the vehicle for the duration of the lease. There is usually no option to buy the vehicle at the end of the lease.

Road tax is usually included for the duration of the lease, but insurance, fuel or charging costs, servicing, maintenance, and tyres are not included as standard. Optional maintenance can usually be added for an extra monthly cost, giving you peace of mind by covering routine servicing, maintenance, and replacement tyres.

Personal leasing can also be a practical way to move into an electric car, giving drivers access to newer EV technology, improved driving ranges, and the latest safety features without committing to long-term ownership.
