Personal car leasing is a cost-effective way to drive a brand-new or used car that suits your lifestyle, budget, and mileage needs. Also known as Personal Contract Hire, or Personal Vehicle Leasing, it is a popular option for new and experienced drivers who want use of a vehicle for a fixed period, without the long-term responsibilities of ownership.
Road tax is usually included for the duration of the lease, but insurance, fuel or charging costs, servicing, maintenance, and tyres are not included as standard. Optional maintenance can usually be added for an extra monthly cost, giving you peace of mind by covering routine servicing, maintenance, and replacement tyres.
Personal leasing can also be a practical way to move into an electric car, giving drivers access to newer EV technology, improved driving ranges, and the latest safety features without committing to long-term ownership.
Our business is built on repeat orders, recommendation and referral. We're passionate about delivering an excellent customer experience.
Find answers to common questions about personal car leasing, covering monthly payments, initial payments, mileage allowances, optional maintenance, eligibility, and what happens at the end of your lease agreement.
The main difference between leasing and buying a car is ownership. When you buy a car, you own it outright or work towards ownership through finance, giving you an asset you can keep, sell, or part-exchange in the future. With Personal Contract Hire, you pay to use the vehicle for a fixed period, then return it at the end of the agreement. This means you can move into a new car more regularly, without needing to sell your current vehicle or worry about the cost of depreciation.

At the end of your personal lease agreement, a collection date will be arranged and the car will be inspected before being returned to the finance provider. The inspection records the vehicle’s condition against fair wear and tear guidelines, checks supplied items such as keys or charging cables, and confirms the mileage against your agreed allowance.
When their agreement ends, many Synergy customers choose to move straight into their next brand-new lease car.
Personal car leasing is available to individuals who pass the finance provider's credit and affordability checks. You will normally need a good or excellent credit score, and will usually need to be aged 18 or over, hold a valid UK driving licence, and provide personal details as part of your application.
First-time leasers and young drivers may be able to lease a car, subject to finance approval and insurance.
Your mileage allowance should be based on how far you expect to drive each year. You can estimate this by working out the average number of miles you drive per week, then multiplying it by 52.
It is worth accounting for regular commutes, weekend driving, and any longer journeys you might take during your lease. If you exceed your agreed mileage allowance, excess mileage charges will apply at the end of your lease.
Yes, maintenance can usually be added to your personal lease for an additional monthly cost. This can help give you more peace of mind by covering routine servicing, maintenance, and replacement tyres, depending on the terms of your agreement.
Most of Synergy's personal lease cars are brand-new, so they usually include manufacturer warranty cover. Warranty terms vary by manufacturer and can be based on time, mileage, or both.
The initial payment is the first payment you make at the start of your personal lease agreement. It is usually equivalent to 3, 6, or 12 monthly rentals and is sometimes referred to as an initial rental.
A higher initial payment can reduce your monthly rentals, while a lower initial payment can help reduce the upfront cost. The cost of the lease overall remains the same, but the payments can be tailored to work to your individual preference.
Your personal lease monthly payments cover the cost of using the vehicle for the agreed contract length and mileage allowance. Road tax is usually included for the duration of the lease.
Insurance, fuel or charging costs, servicing and maintenance are not normally included as standard. Optional maintenance can usually be added for an additional monthly cost.
Ending your agreement early isn't usually straightforward, as personal lease agreements are fixed for the length of your contract. If you need to hand your car back before the agreed end date, early termination charges will normally apply. These can be 50% to 100% of outstanding rentals, depending on the funder and where you are in your agreement.
It depends on what's available to you. Personal leasing is open to most drivers who pass credit and affordability checks, offering full choice over vehicle and provider. Salary sacrifice can offer attractive savings, but only if your employer runs a scheme and you meet their eligibility criteria – so it isn't an option for everyone.
Business vs Personal Leasing
Personal leasing is designed for individuals who want a car for private use, while business leasing is for companies, sole traders, partnerships, and other organisations. The right option depends on who is taking out the agreement, how the vehicle will be used, and whether the lease is being arranged personally or through a business.
What is Personal Contract Hire?
Personal Contract Hire, often shortened to PCH, is another name for personal car leasing. You choose a brand-new car, agree the contract length, initial payment, and mileage allowance, then make fixed monthly payments for the length of the agreement. PCH can suit drivers who want predictable monthly costs, no ownership commitment, and the option to move into a new vehicle at the end of their lease.
Electric Car Leasing
Electric car leasing can be a practical way to switch to an EV without buying one outright. It gives drivers access to newer electric models, battery technology, charging capability, and safety features for a fixed period. This can be especially useful if you are choosing your first EV or want to keep up as electric car technology develops.

Synergy's range of SUV and 4x4 personal lease deals covers a wide choice of makes and models, from compact crossovers to larger family SUVs, suited to both city driving and longer journeys.
