Volkswagen ID.3 Car Leasing
For one of the largest and most influential companies in the world, the car we have here is the future. This is the Volkswagen ID.3, a car that Volkswagen has focused much of its rumoured $50-billion investment in electric vehicles upon, a car that perhaps represents the future of motoring greater than any other.
We first saw the vehicle that would become the ID.3 at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Unlike many vehicles, the finished ID.3 is very similar to the original concept and for good reason too. Volkswagen is pinning its hopes on the “I.D” brand and the ID.3 is the first new product to be released under the new sub-marque. Much confidence is held in this new product too, with influential figures suggesting it is this vehicle - and not the much publicised Tesla models - that will fuel a great switch from combustion to electric power.
So, that begs the question, what has Volkswagen given us? Well, it’s a hatchback of course. It has 5-doors and a boot where a boot should be. In many ways it looks a bit like a cross between an up! and a Golf, a fusion of those designs. It’s typical VW stuff, inoffensive but elegant. Some might call it unadventurous to look at, but this is the formula that has served the company so well over the last 50 years or so.
The real adventure is in technology, of course. The ID.3’s “engine” lies at the rear axle, a 201bhp electric motor that drives the rear wheels. A rear-wheel drive Volkswagen? Rare, to say the least. Range varies depending on the model you choose, but the 58kWh battery has a WLTP-tested range of 260-miles, while the 78kWh has been proven to go up to 341-miles on a single charge.
Electric vehicles don’t have many moving components compared to a combustion-engined car. With no engine or gearbox to worry about, the interior of the ID.3 is roomy and the boot is exactly what you’d expect from a vehicle like the firm’s Golf. The battery pack lies underneath the floor, so seating is perhaps a little higher than a normal hatchback, but there’s a boot there to visibility and the commanding feel of the seating position for the driver.
For a modern car there’s everything you’d expect including some superb driver assistance systems and functions controlled almost entirely through the use of a 10-inch touchscreen that dominates a fairly minimalist interior design.
