If you thought there was something a bit Golf-y about the Volkswagen Touran, you’d be right. This practical and comfort-orientated MPV is based on one of the world’s most popular cars and that may well be why it’s always had a certain level of popularity.
Being mostly Golf under that more practical, boxy body, the Touran comes with the same engines and gearbox you’d expect to find in a Golf. A choice of petrol and diesel engines with varying power outputs with the option of Volkswagen’s ‘DSG’ automatic gearbox.
The petrol-powered engines are either 1.2 or 1.4-litres in size and turbocharged, popular choices for Synergy customers covering fewer annual miles or who live in urban locations.
As for the diesels, there’s a 1.6-litre and the excellent 2.0-litre turbo that has an excellent power output and fuel efficiency ratings. In its most efficient form – the 1.6-litre TDI diesel – the Touran is capable of over 52mpg and puts out just 119g/km of CO2.
As the Touran is intended for families, Volkswagen has done what it can to maximise available space and practicality, including lots of useful places to put bottles, snacks, phones – anything, really – in the front and around the doors. The Touran is a 7-seater so in the back there’s 2 seats most suitable for children but when they’re not in use there’s a large boot that, with the first row also not in use, provides an expansive 1,857-litre load space.
Depending on the model you choose, there’ll be a different selection of technology and equipment. To give you an idea as to the tech across the range though, there’s parking sensors, tri-zone climate control, touchscreen infotainment with navigation, post-collision braking, cruise control, panoramic sunroof and Bluetooth. Top-spec ‘R-Design’ cars get sporty trim inside and out, and special sporty ‘R-Design’ seating.
