Posted 4 years agoDelve into the BMW history books for a bit and you’ll see that, for quite some time, the Bavarian firm was selling both a 3-series coupe and convertible. That changed back in 2013 though, when BMW rearranged its models and introduced the even-numbered series of cars, dedicated to the sportier, more glamourous body styles like coupes and convertibles. This was when the BMW 4-series first appeared.
The BMW 4-series consists of almost entirely the same architecture and technology as the ever-popular 3-series, but with a stylish 2-door coupe or open-top convertible body to go around it. In which case, why does this particular BMW 4-series have 4-doors? Doesn’t that just make it a 3-series?
Well, it’s all about design here. The BMW 4-series Gran Coupe that we feature on this page is different in that it’s actually a sort of hatchback. Officially, the shape of the rear of the BMW 4-series Gran Coupe is known as ‘Fastback’, and it gives the car a coupe form but still allows it to fit in 2 extra doors for rear passengers. In the back, there’s slightly less room than in a standard 3-series saloon, but it’s a very small difference. A 480-litre boot capacity is more than plenty for suitcases and large shopping trips, too, so practicality isn’t sacrificed much for this more elegant silhouette.
Under the bonnet, the BMW 4-series range also features the same selection of excellent engines as the 3-series, so efficiency and low road taxes are still more than obtainable. As with many BMW products, the engine that most customer lean towards is the 2.0-litre turbo diesel, badged as ‘BMW 420d’ but there’s still plenty of power available for those wanting more performance, most noticeably from the mighty 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo petrol engine – badged ‘BMW 440i’. This 326bhp engine features fantastic torque and a sonorous soundtrack that really helps it find a place in your heart quickly, it’s certainly something every passionate driver should experience in life.
As well as the excellent engines and shapely body, the BMW 4-series Gran Coupe also has the luxurious build and interior design that is expected of a BMW. There’s also a variety of options available to customers, to help make the car more individual to your needs and tastes.
The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe M Sport comes with aluminium hexagon interior trim, shadowline exterior trim, leather upholstery and sports front seats. The BMW 4 Series Grand Coupe Sport features black sport interior trim with pearl chrome, sports front seats and light alloy wheels.
With the body of a coupe but the practicality of a 4-door car, the BMW 4-series Gran Coupe is a model that tries to offer Synergy customers a happy middle ground between 3-series saloon sensibleness and BMW 4-series desirability. Of course, like a true BMW it delivers on its mission statement and is a fabulous car to have on your driveway.
