Vans came before pick-ups: the compact eTP3 was BYD's first van in the UK, imported in small numbers ahead of a wider commercial push. The Shark marks the next step for BYD van leasing. It made its European debut at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, part of BYD Group's largest-ever stand at the event, and UK order books opened that same month. First customer deliveries are due in the final quarter of the year. A five-seat double cab, the Shark suits business customers who need genuine load and towing capability, as well as personal drivers looking for a lifestyle pick-up that doesn't rely on diesel power.

The Shark is already on sale in markets including Australia, Brazil and South Africa, where it sold almost 20,000 units in Australia alone during its first year. It arrives in Europe as only the second plug-in hybrid pick-up on sale, following the Ford Ranger PHEV. CO2 emissions of just 23g/km also bring a Benefit-in-Kind tax advantage over comparable diesel pick-ups, a point that matters for company car drivers and fleets reconsidering their choice of vehicle.

The BYD Shark launches in the UK with a single trim level:

- Standard: Comes with a 15.6-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital driver display, a head-up display and a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system as standard. Heated and ventilated front seats, vegan leather upholstery, wireless phone charging, keyless entry and Vehicle-to-Load sockets are also included, along with 18-inch alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera.

18-inch all-black alloy wheels are available as a cost option, and availability can vary based on current manufacturer ordering options.

Engine & Performance

The Shark uses a single Super Hybrid DMO powertrain, combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors, one on each axle, for standard all-wheel drive. The petrol engine produces 150bhp on its own and works mainly as a generator, feeding the motors directly or charging the 32.2kWh Blade Battery rather than driving the wheels itself. Four operating modes cover different scenarios: pure electric driving, petrol-generated electric power for city conditions, a parallel mode that combines engine and motors for harder acceleration, and a direct-drive mode for efficient motorway cruising.

BYD quotes a combined 430bhp and 650Nm of torque for 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds. The Shark covers up to 55 miles on electric power alone (WLTP), and up to 419 miles from a full charge and a full tank of petrol. Fuel consumption is rated at 80mpg on the WLTP weighted combined cycle, dropping to 29.4mpg once the battery is depleted. CO2 emissions are 23g/km. A three-phase 11kW AC charger takes the battery from 15% to 100% in around three hours, while a 55kW DC rapid charger adds 30% to 80% in 21 minutes. The Shark can also tow up to 2,500kg.

Exterior Features

BYD describes the Shark's design as shark-inspired, pointing to the headlights and grille as nods to the animal's eyes and open mouth. What actually stands out is a front end that stays fairly restrained for the segment: a full-width light bar, high-set headlights and a grille that skips the aggressive add-ons found on some rivals. Plastic cladding across the lower doors and wheelarches protects the paintwork, and chunky tyres fill the arches on standard 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels.

A matching light bar runs across the rear tailgate. Tail-lights sit at the vehicle's outer edges, and the tailgate carries the biggest BYD badge fitted to any of the brand's vehicles, though that's about as bold as the design gets. A 3260mm wheelbase and short overhangs give the Shark approach and departure angles of 31° and 19.3°, both useful for rougher terrain.

Five exterior colours are available, including signature Atlantis Blue alongside Obsidian Black, Polar White, Grey Green and Sunrise Orange. All-black 18-inch alloy wheels can be specified as a cost option. Availability can vary based on current manufacturer ordering options.

Interior Features

Two screens dominate the dashboard: a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel and a 15.6-inch infotainment display, which BYD claims is the largest fitted to any pick-up. Despite the size of that screen, the Shark still uses a column-mounted gear shifter and large physical buttons for common functions, rather than pushing everything through the touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a voice assistant and built-in navigation are all standard, and the BYD app allows remote control of the cabin's heating and cooling.

Front seats are trimmed in vegan leather and both heated and ventilated. Central grab handles are a practical addition for rougher ground rather than a styling detail.

BYD describes the rear seats as closer to a family SUV than a typical pick-up, largely down to a flat floor and a 27-degree seat-back angle. That's a stretch as a direct comparison, but the space itself is genuine: almost 90cm of rear legroom and proper foot room for three passengers. A 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system, a 50W wireless charging pad and keyless entry complete the standard specification.

Safety Features

The Shark hasn't been tested by Euro NCAP itself. The same vehicle, sold in Australia as the Shark 6, holds a five-star rating from ANCAP under protocols aligned with Euro NCAP, scoring 85% for adult occupant protection and 87% for child occupant protection, against a lower 74% for pedestrians.

Standard equipment includes seven airbags, ISOFIX mounts on the rear seats, Child Presence Detection and a tyre pressure monitoring system. BYD also points to a chassis built from more than 50% high-strength steel, though independent UK crash data isn't yet available.

Driver assistance includes adaptive cruise control, forward and rear collision warning, blind spot detection, lane departure assistance with emergency lane keeping, and cross-traffic alert with automatic braking.
