Fiat 500
The supermini all others are measured by, the Fiat 500 is a true icon of the motoring world.
If you look in the history books, you can go all the way back to 1936 to discover the origins of one of the world’s most famous cars. The original Fiat 500 was nicknamed ‘Topolino’ – ‘Little Mouse’ in Italian – and was produced until 1955. 2 years later, the model that made the Fiat 500 truly name truly famous was released.
Throughout the following decade, the ‘New’ Fiat 500 became a bit of a style icon, appearing in Italian films and fashion shoots, becoming part of Italian culture in the process. The 500 was the symbol of working-class style in its homeland and so it came as no surprise that Fiat relaunched it back in 2007 upon the 50th anniversary of the famous 1957 car. In terms of representing its nation, the Fiat 500 is perhaps the real symbol of Italian motoring, sitting above even the likes of Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini.
Though it used to be available with a diesel engine, the current Fiat 500 is only available with petrol power. Synergy customers can choose between a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder produced around 69bhp or the tiny but mighty 0.9-litre 2-cylinder ‘TwinAir’ which manages to produce 84bhp. The latter packs serious punch for an engine of such small proportions and is also said to be capable of 60mpg on the combined testing cycle. A 5-speed manual is the classic way to enjoy a 500, but for those seeking a 2-pedal layout, Fiat’s ‘Dualogic’ automatic is an option in some models.
The 500 is available in 2 body styles, the 500, and 500C. The ‘C’ stands for Convertible, and it matches the original design for the 500’s opening roof which is a reclining fabric layout. It’s simple to use, affordable, and really adds something to the overall experience of this car.
Within the 500 range you’ll find Fiat’s ‘Uconnect’ touchscreen infotainment system, DAB radio and Bluetooth, climate and cruise control, navigation, plenty of customisation and even the option of extras such as Beats audio system.
Here in the UK, we often forget how important this car has been in motoring history. Choosing to drive a Fiat 500 connects you to past glories at the same time you drive a car that is a brilliant modern-day execution of what a supermini should be like.
