Posted 5 years agoAfter the end of the Second World War, Italy was not in a particularly good way. It took some time for the nation to start recovering from that awful conflict and by the mid-1950’s the nation was beginning to get back to where it wanted to be. As a result, more and more of its citizens needed personal transport and Fiat designer Dante Giacosa had an idea. Little did he know that this idea would produce one of the greatest cars of the 20th century – the Fiat Cinquecento.
Throughout the following decade, Giacosa’s idea – the ‘new’ Fiat 500 – grew into an icon, a real symbol of freedom, a real pillar of Italian culture. The 500 was the fresh face of working-class style in its homeland, in fact this car is arguably the defining symbol of Italian motoring culture, even more so than the likes of Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini.
The Cinquecento - meaning ‘five-hundred’ in Italian - was launched in 1957, becoming an instant hit with the Italian public, who, for really the first time, were able to have affordable access to personal transport. Over the course of its lifespan, nearly 3,900,000 of them were sold, an incredible achievement, even today.
Production of what was known as the ‘new’ Fiat 500 ended in 1975, and for a while Fiat experimented with other small cars without ever finding the same success. However, in 2007 Fiat launched the new ‘new’ Fiat 500, and it’s fair to say that this car has captured the enthusiasm in customers that was so prevalent in the 1950’s and 60’s in Italy.
