PORSCHE CAYENNE
Porsche’s Cayenne is one of the finest luxury SUVs in the world, and is probably more capable than you think…
When you think of how far luxury SUVs have come on in the last few years, it’s easy to forget that Porsche has been building one since 2002, when its Cayenne first took the to the roads. You could very easily make a case for this being the King of the SUVs ever since, with its fabulous road and off-road capability and Porsche’s famous meticulous attention to detail.
There’s a distinct feel to nearly every Porsche model. Composure, communication and speed all combine in every model to be excellent driver’s cars. Even the Cayenne, as a larger all-wheel drive SUV has these characteristics.
The current engine line-up for the Porsche Cayenne is petrol only, following Porsche decision to drop diesel power entirely from its line-up. Choice then lies between a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 and a 4.0-litre V8 with hybrid enhancement. The latter, in ‘S E-Hybrid’ form is the model that perhaps represents the best of both power and efficiency, producing a touch over 410bhp yet still only putting out 79g/km of CO2 emissions. For outright power, the ‘Turbo S’ comes with around 515bhp, enough to help it reach 62mph in 4.1-seconds – not bad at all for a car that seats 4 in luxury and weights in at over 2.2-tonnes. Regardless of the engine you pick, your transmission will be an 8-speed automatic, smooth and seamless in nature.
Despite its reputation as a sporty SUV on the tarmac, the Cayenne is a very accomplished off-roader and can cope with much more than many people think. Unlike many modern SUVs, the Cayenne can easily handle loose grip surfaces and difficult terrain, though many are understandably cautious about taking their Porsche away from the asphalt.
