French manufacturer DS is a brand brimming with confidence. ‘DS’ is actually a French play on words, sounding like ‘Déesse’ when spoken in a French accent which means ‘Goddess’ across the channel. DS says its machines are inspired by the latest Parisian trends and designs, and in the DS 3 they’ve undoubtedly produced one of the most stylish hatchbacks seen on the road.
Prior to joining the newly-launched DS brand in 2016, the DS 3 was part of the Citroen stable where it received much praise for its efficiency, styling and drivability. When the DS brand was formed as a separate entity in 2016 it received updates to bring it into line with the luxury image that the marque projects, though the overall look and image including its famous ‘Floating Roof’ and reclining fabric roof in the convertible have remained in place. Recently, special editions featuring collaborative designs and unique new looks.
It’s petrol power only when it comes to engines for the DS 3, but it’s the ‘PureTech’ turbocharged 3-cylinder units that recently took the 2018 Engine of the Year crown. These 1.2-litre units deliver either 109 or 128bhp (depending on your choice of tune) and on a combined cycle they’re capable of over 60mpg which will relate to strong economy in the real world. As far as gearboxes go, there’s a choice of 6-speed units – manual or automatic – to select from depending on your preference.
Being a DS, the 3 is very well equipped. All DS 3 models come with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system which provides access to functions such as navigation, smartphone connectivity, all the DS 3’s settings and the MyDS app which connects to user’s smartphones. Cruise control with a speed limiting function is available on all models, while automatic air condition is present on all but the entry level ‘chic’ model.
If you’re after a well-equipped and efficient hatchback there’s plenty of cars to choose from. If you want to add style and great design into that recipe, the DS 3 is as good as they come.
