FORD EDGE
One of the newest additions to the Ford stable, the Edge is a handsome new SUV with plenty to offer.
The ‘new’ Ford Edge isn’t really all that new to our friends over the Atlantic. The original Ford Edge launched back in 2007 and the Edge we have here in the UK is actually the 2nd generation to be produced.
When you approach an Edge the first thing you’ll notice is the looks and size of it. It’s a large SUV that represents a lot of metal for the price and the strong, handsome look makes it look seriously impressive on the road, almost commanding.
In the Ford range, the Edge sits above the Kuga and is a much larger SUV. The bright and spacious interior is one of the highlights of this particular car, especially in the rear where passengers are well catered for with plenty of space to move around in and reclining seats. There’s lots of room out in the boot too, 602-litres to be precise. If you fold down the rear seats though, that space increases to a seriously substantial 1,847-litres.
In terms of power, the Ford Edge only comes with one engine option – a 2.0-litre turbo diesel - though it does have two power outputs. If you opt for the 178bhp version you get a 6-speed manual gearbox to go with it, though if you choose the 207bhp version then you get Ford’s automatic gearbox as standard instead. All Ford Edge models come with all-wheel drive as standard, meaning some light excursions off the tarmac shouldn’t be too strenuous. As this car was developed in North America, it benefits from a North American-style suspension setup, meaning it has a heavy leaning towards a comfortable and quiet ride. It even features technology similar to what you find in noise-cancelling headphones to give you a quiet cabin atmosphere.
Ford is usually pretty generous with its equipment and gadgets and it’s the same story with the Edge. Cruise and climate control, Ford’s ‘SYNC3’ touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, rear-view camera, traffic sign recognition and heated front seats are all standard equipment on the ‘Titanium’ spec car and the options list is fairly short. Active parking assistance, a Sony DAB and navigation sound system, a panoramic roof and adaptive LED headlights being the standout extras.
Synergy customers looking for a spacious family SUV with good looks and a strong line-up of standard equipment will likely be impressed by the Ford Edge – for extra luxury then the ‘Vignale’ model is worth considering.
