Posted 7 years agoIt’s been 10 years since Jaguar introduced a new car to produce the aging and unfashionable S-Type. That car was called the XF and the sporty feeling, handsome saloon helped Jaguar totally transform its image into a brand that was deeply desirable, coveted by many all over the world.
4 years after the introduction of the XF, Jaguar merged with Land Rover to become Jaguar Land Rover, or ‘JLR’ to those of us in the game, and it’s very difficult to see how that would have been possible without the XF winning over so many drivers around the world. Jaguar proudly boasts that the XF has won more awards than any other model in the company’s history, but when you drive one it’s easy to see how this has been possible.
The XF is built mostly from lightweight aluminium components, so despite being a mid-sized saloon it moves like a much smaller car. This is a Jaguar, so it’s simply not acceptable for one of its cars to handle in an unsporting manner, and the XF is among the best cars in this segment of the market for engaging driving dynamics. That doesn’t mean that it can’t be efficient though, Jaguar’s 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine is capable of north of 50mpg while putting out just 124g/km of CO2 emissions, making it great for those Synergy customers who need to travel longer distances. Those who do want to enjoy the XF’s sporting leanings though may well want to look at the ‘Chequered Flag’ edition, available with a 296bhp engine that gives a 0-60mph time of 5.6-seconds. The XF is also available with all-wheel drive technology and the option of a smooth automatic gearbox from transmission experts ZF. In some models, a 6-speed manual is provided as standard in its place, but the XF really feels more special with that automatic gearbox fitted.
Currently the XF range consists of 5 trim levels – Prestige, Portfolio, R-Sport, Chequered Flag and S. All XF models feature navigation, smartphone integration, leather seating and cruise control as standard, but R-Sport adds a sportier look with a styled body kit and larger alloy wheels. At the top of the XF tree is the special ‘S’ model, which is fitted with a large 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine as well as configurable driving dynamics.
