MAZDA MX-5 RF CONVERTIBLE CAR LEASING
It’s amazing to see how far the Mazda MX-5 has come since its birth way back in 1989. Originally, this little sports car was conceived as a (at the time) modern tribute to the British sports cars of the 1950’s and 60’s. 2019 saw the car celebrate its 30th anniversary, with more than a million models produced during its time, it’s clear to see that this is a much-loved and admired machine favoured by driving enthusiasts and casual weekend explorers alike.
This one is a bit different. It’s the Mazda MX-5 RF convertible, having a retractable hard top instead of the drop and flick back soft top that the MX-5 is so widely known for. A soft top isn’t for everyone though, hence why Mazda decided to bring us the RF.
In actuality, the RF adds around 50kg of weight to the MX-5 because of that folding metal mechanism and the increased support it needs, but in terms of almost everything else, the RF convertible is the same as the MX-5 convertible. Engines, technology, all of that is identical, but in case that doesn’t mean anything to you, we’ll fill in the blanks here.
Power comes from a 1.5 or 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. The smaller of the two units produces around 130bhp and comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, which the 2.0-litre also gets, but it has 181bhp to play with, a significant hike in power. It’ll take around 6.5-seconds to get from a standstill to 62mph in the standard benchmark test, which is pretty quick, but really, the MX-5 RF convertible isn’t about outright pace, it’s about feel.
Mazda believes strongly in a philosophy known in Japanese as “Jinba Ittai”. This phrase describes the almost symbiotic interaction between a horse and its rider, and it’s how the Hiroshima-based firm wants its MX-5 RF convertible to feel. As a lightweight vehicle with a front-engined, rear-wheel drive layout and almost perfect weight distribution, it is often described as one of the world’s best handling vehicles thanks to its neutral, rear-biased handling and accuracy and adjustability in the corners. It’s the experience that people lease a Mazda MX-5 RF convertible for.
