The E-class Cabriolet is not all about speed – it is focused on comfort and luxury instead. That’s not to say it isn’t fast though, it’s just that this is a car you’ll want to cruise around in – preferably with the roof down, and preferably in glorious weather. The cabin houses a deluxe interior with fine-quality materials and a truly terrific build quality, meaning you’ll never want to get out of it. One things’ for sure, this Mercedes certainly makes fine-weather UK driving fun again.
Behind the wheel, the driving position is sublime. There’s a lot of adjustment for both the steering wheel and seat to guarantee the utmost comfort for lengthy drives. Visibility is also excellent and is helped by a collection of sensors and cameras around the car.
Your back-seat passengers are well cared for also. You can even fit two child seats in the rear should you need to. Entering and exiting are uncomplicated, too, because the car’s electric seats slide frontward and the seatbelts are hidden away, ready to be handed to you by the German brand’s “butler” that delivers the seatbelt within shoulder reach.
There are a couple of diesels and a pair of petrol powerplants available and these come with rear or all-wheel drive. If you want hardcore performance, though, then you need to look at the AMG 53 version. As a luxury car, the E 400 is another one to go for if you like a musical exhaust note and smooth performance to match, with slightly less ferocity.
Option bundles are top value, too – the technology and convenience you'll want are priced very well against comparable upgrades from competitors. Overall sophistication, optional all-wheel drive safety and an avant-garde cabin design place the E-Class Cabriolet as one of the most talented all-rounders you can lease today. It is a big car, yet with all its driving assistants and sensors, driving and parking in urban areas is easy.
Having the roof in the “down” position doesn’t have to mean being freezing or blown away by the British weather, either. Why? Well, because the neck-level heaters and the wind-deflector work well to make you feel protected. These can be deactivated if you want to be subjected to the environment wholly. And with all the windows powered down, the big car feels suitably trimmed down and joyful.
