BYD Seal Review: 2025

Synergy got the chance to review the BYD Seal. This striking EV is a flagship model for the brand which couples long-range electric driving with luxury and style.

BYD are a rising star in the UK market, having introduced five models since their 2023 European launch: the Atto 3Dolphin, Seal, Seal U and Sealion 7. Let’s see what our team thought.

Who makes BYD cars?

Founded in 1995, BYD are a Chinese brand which initially focused on battery production before expanding into the automotive sector. They’re now one of the largest EV manufacturers in the world, and are seen as a direct competitor to Tesla, offering a range of fully electric and plug-in hybrid models.

BYD Seal specs

The Seal is offered comes in two trim levels: Design and Excellence. It’s built on the brand’s advanced e-Platform 3.0, which integrates rapid charging and improved efficiency. Both trims feature sleek, aerodynamic styling with flush door handles, and a full-width LED light bar at the rear.

Economy & performance

Performance is a key strength of the BYD Seal, particularly in the all-wheel-drive Excellence model. Both trim levels use an 82.5kWh battery, with the entry-level Design offering rear-wheel drive, 312bhp, and 360Nm of torque.

Choose the Excellence trim adds all-wheel drive and significantly boosts performance. With power increased to 523bhp, this version delivers a more dynamic driving experience, ensuring rapid acceleration and improved handling in various conditions.

What is the seal’s range?

The rear-wheel-drive Design model has a WLTP range of up to 354 miles, providing excellent efficiency for long motorway journeys. The all-wheel-drive Excellence trim is more powerful, but does have a slightly reduced range of 323 miles because of the dual-motor setup.

Both versions support ultra-fast charging, with a DC charger replenishing 10-80% of the battery in around 30 minutes—perfect for quick top-ups on the go. Real-world range will depend on factors such as driving style, weather conditions, and load.

Interior and infotainment

Inside, the BYD Seal features a modern, tech-focused cabin with premium materials and a spacious design. A standout feature is the large 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen, which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Heated and ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, and ambient lighting contribute to a high-quality, comfortable interior.

Overall, the Seal feels like a premium product. You get soft touch materials, thermal insulation, sound proofing and double-glazed front door windows too.

BYD seal boot space

Practicality is another strong point for the Seal. The boot offers 400 litres of space, with the rear seats folding flat to expanding its capacity for larger items. An additional 50-litre front trunk (frunk) provide extra room for luggage or charging cables.

Safety and security

In terms of safety, the Seal is equipped with a range of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. It also has 360-degree camera and parking sensors which make driving in urban areas a breeze.

BYD has spent over two decades developing and refining its battery technology, producing more than three million battery-powered vehicles in the process. Safety is a core focus for the Blade Battery. It uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP), a material that offers more safety compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries, reducing the risk of overheating while maintaining long-term performance.

Can you lease a BYD Seal through salary sacrifice?

For businesses seeking a cost-effective and tax-efficient way to provide employees with an electric vehicle, the BYD Seal qualifies for salary sacrifice leasing. This scheme enables employees to lease a Seal while reducing their tax and National Insurance contributions, making driving an EV more affordable.
