VOLKSWAGEN T-CROSS
The T-Cross is Volkswagen’s smallest SUV, and displays a funky, youthful personality.
2019 sees the arrival of Volkswagen’s answer to the Nissan Juke, Kia Stonic and Renault Captur. It’s called the T-Cross and this model is best though of as the ‘Polo SUV’ in the Volkswagen family, the smallest that firm has to offer - underneath the slightly larger T-Roc, which is based upon the Golf.
Volkswagen says that style and versatility are going to be what really draws people to this car. 12 separate exterior colours are expected to be available from launch, alongside design upgrades to personalise items such as alloy wheels and wing mirrors. A full-width light bar across the rear of the car is very on-trend in automotive design at the moment, and the T-Cross brings its own to the table along with more distinctive light designs and chunky looks.
Despite those 4x4-style looks, there won’t be any four-wheel drive system offered on the new T-Cross. Only front-wheel drive will be offered and there’s no diesel either, so the choice for the engines lies between a 94 or 113bhp 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. As with the majority of Volkswagen products, a 6-speed manual transmission is offered as standard, while the 7-speed double-clutch ‘DSG’ automatic is available as a cost option.
Being a boxier, taller take on the Polo supermini, there’s more room for heads and legs in both the front and rear of the T-Cross. Volkswagen has also made a real effort to give the T-Cross versatile storage arrangements with an adjustable boot floor as well as movable rear seats that can recline and slide forwards and backwards. As a result, maximum loading capacity for the boot is 455-litres and with the back seats folded down entirely, this increases to a substantial 1,281-litres, a massive figure for a vehicle with this footprint.
Inside the T-Cross, the youthful vibe continues with the option of interior colours and designs not found on any of the firm’s other SUVs. Among the selection of standard equipment is a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, but this can be upgraded to an 8-inch version that also comes with a digital cockpit for behind the steering wheel, giving the T-Cross a truly modern feel.
